Modeling Tip

Creating Sloped Roof Buildings

When modeling point sources near structures, the Building Profile Input Program (BPIP) and BPIP-PRIME executables are used to calculate downwash values for input to air dispersion models like AERMOD and CALPUFF. One limitation of BPIP is that it can only model buildings with flat roofs. Buildings featuring a sloped or pitched roof must be approximated.

To aid users in making these approximations, Lakes Environmental created a Sloped Roof utility in the latest release of CALPUFF View. This utility allows users to automatically create multiple building tiers based on the defined top and bottom tier to create the appearance of a sloped roof.

To define a sloped roof:

  1. Completely define the bottom tier of your building.
  2. Completely define the top tier of your building. If your building comes to a point, define the smallest possible tier [0.1 x 0.1 m.]

  3. Click Slope Roof button. The following tool will load:

  4. Type in the number of tiers and click the Generate button.

The tiers will be created equally distributed along the range of dimensions specified. Sloped roof tiers will only be created if the bottom and top tiers are completely defined. The Sloped Roof utility works for many different types of buildings including basic tapered buildings, sloped and double-sloped roofs, mixed tier shapes, and roofs with varied slopes.

Submit Your Modeling Tips Today!

We are currently accepting submissions for the Monthly Modeling Tip section that appears in our newsletters. If you have a modeling tip that may benefit our readers, please send it to us at support@webLakes.com. Your name and the name of your organization will appear below the tip providing you with an opportunity for increased exposure.

Smog Alerts for Europe

April 4, 2014 -The UK news media has been buzzing with reports of air pollution alerts associated, at least in part, with the long-range transport of dust from the Sahara. Colleagues from Africa have asked why we in the UK are worried about the health effects of a relatively rare occurrence of this long-range dust all the way across Europe, when African countries experience dust storms of much higher intensity almost daily at some times of year.

American's Energy Usage Jumps in 2013

April 2, 2014 - Despite many individual efforts to decrease energy usage for 2013 increased by 2.3 Quadrillion thermal units over the previous year. These statistics have been monitored and presented by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in the most recent energy flow charts measuring renewable, fossil and even nuclear energy.

EPA Seeks Small Entity Participation on Upcoming Medium- and Heavy-Duty Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards

April 2, 2014 - WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is inviting small businesses, governments, and not-for-profit organizations to participate as Small Entity Representatives (SERs) for a Small Business Advocacy Review (SBAR) Panel. This panel will focus on the agency’s proposed extension of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards beyond model year 2018.

Environmentalists on Edge Over Florida Regulation Bill

March 31, 2014 - Environmentalists across Florida are on edge as a bill that would reduce local control over environmental protection moves through the state Legislature.

The House bill would limit counties’ ability to enforce regulations on springs, stormwater and wetlands adopted after July 2003, and allow local government officials to change their long-range growth plans with a simple majority vote. Currently, if Sarasota County and other communities change their plans, by increasing density in a certain area, for example, a supermajority — four of the five commissioners — must support the move.

Eleven EU Countries Exceed Air Pollutant Emission Limits

March 24, 2014 - Under the National Emission Ceilings (NEC) Directive, EU Member States have individual emission limits, known as 'ceilings', that were to be achieved by 2010 for four different pollutants: sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ammonia (NH3) and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC).

An early analysis of the official data shows that 11 Member States breached at least one ceiling in 2012, compared to 10 countries in 2011. As in previous years, the most commonly breached ceiling was nitrogen oxide (NOx), with nine Member States exceeding their designated levels. Road transport contributes around 40 % of total EU NOx emissions and is one of the main factors behind the large number of NOx exceedances – reductions from this sector over the last two decades have not been as large as originally anticipated.
