Modeling Tip
Create Plume Animations in CALPUFF View
The latest release of CALPUFF View, Version 7.0.5, includes an exciting plume animation feature. After a successful CALPUFF model run, the software automatically imports the binary output files (CONC.DAT, DFLX.DAT, and WFLX.DAT) to produce time series contour plots. These plots can be synchronized with the CALMET.DAT wind field to produce detailed animations.
The Plume Animation tree menu will appear after a successful CALPUFF model run. Options include animation speed, looping option, synchronization with the CALMET.DAT parameters, species selection, and more.
To manually jump from one time to the next, use the blue Time Range controls. The green buttons in the Animation Controls allow you to play the plume animation forwards or backwards.
To record and play back a plume animation video:
- Open the Multimedia menu and select Record Animation
The Multimedia Options dialog will appear and remain on top of all other layers in the software. - Select the desired Frame Rate (the number of frames per second that will appear when the animation is played). Higher Frame Rates will play much faster.
- The Advanced Settings allow you to choose color depth and compression options. Modify if necessary.
- Return to the main display and set up the animation controls to the point where you want the recording to begin. You can also modify the Graphical Options to make changes to contour settings, wind field display, and more.
- When you’re ready to begin, click the Begin Recording button in the Multimedia Options dialog. You will then need to hit the Play button on the Animation Controls.
When the recording is complete, you can view the AVI file by selecting the Play button from the Multimedia Options dialog or by using the Multimedia | Play Recording menu option.
An example plume animation video is available on our website. This video was created using the Tutorial project that comes with the CALPUFF View software.

EPA Sets Cleaner Fuel and Car Standards
March 3, 2014 - WASHINGTON - Based on extensive input from the public and a broad range of stakeholders, including public health groups, auto manufacturers, refiners, and states, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today finalized emission standards for cars and gasoline that will significantly reduce harmful pollution and prevent thousands of premature deaths and illnesses, while also enabling efficiency improvements in the cars and trucks we drive. These cleaner fuel and car standards are an important component of the administration’s national program for clean cars and trucks, which also include historic fuel efficiency standards that are saving new vehicle owners at the gas pump. Once fully in place, the standards will help avoid up to 2,000 premature deaths per year and 50,000 cases of respiratory ailments in children.
EPA Improves U.S. — Mexico Border with Environmental Projects
February 27, 2014 - DALLAS - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded more than $720,000 in grants to fund 16 environmental projects along the Texas and New Mexico U.S-Mexico border. The projects include improving air monitoring, expanding waste collection and recycling, and improving environmental awareness and education among area residents. “At EPA, we are always looking for ways to help communities identify and solve problems. It’s one of the most important parts of our job,” said Regional Administrator Ron Curry. “Funding these 16 projects will help kick-start work to protect places along the border where people live, work, and play.”
Predicting the Climate of the Future
February 15, 2014 - Climate scientists rely on models to predict how the weather and climate will respond to changes in variable such as CO2 emissions, natural methane emissions, solar intensity and a host of other factors. No individual model can claim to accurately predict future climate. So it is very important to look at multiple models and compare their predictions. The Carnegie Institution for Science is a leader in this area.
Quarterly Update of Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory: September 2013
February 10, 2014 -Australia’s National Greenhouse Accounts are made up of a series of comprehensive reports and databases that estimate, and account for, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. These publications fulfil Australia’s international and domestic reporting requirements.
EPA Releases Annual Climate Protection Partnerships Report
February 3, 2014 – The Environmental Protection Agency has just released its annual Climate Protection Partnerships report, and it indicates that the U.S. is in a strong position to achieve economic growth — in other words, job growth — as it transitions to safer, healthier and more sustainable forms of energy. The report comes on top of great news for job growth in the solar industry, with as-yet untapped offshore wind energy and vast reserves of geothermal energy offering potential for even greater growth in the green jobs sector.
