Large Scale Computation of MM5-CALPUFF for Regional Air Quality Assessment
Inter-Comparisons of AERMOD, CALPUFF, and EIAA with Respect to the Alaska Tracer Field Data
Dr. Jesse Thé will be presenting the above 2 papers at the A&WMA Specialty Conference, Guideline on Air Quality Models:
Applications and FLAG Developments. This symposium, being held on April 26-28, 2006 in Denver,
Colorado, will provide a technical forum for environmental professionals to share experiences
with the revisions to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Guideline on Air Quality Models.

Monthly Modeling Tip
|
Modeling Tip: Sloped/Pitched Roofs |
When calculating building downwash using the US EPA BPIP and BPIPPRM*
programs, you may encounter the need to model a building with
a sloped roof. As BPIP is only capable of modeling
buildings with flat roofs, you will need to approximate the roof.
It is always advisable to check with your regulator to learn how such buildings should
be modeled, but two possibilities are given below:
-
Single Tier (Conservative)
Creating a building with a flat roof at the height of the sloped roof’s peak
will give you a larger building profile, therefore giving you a conservative
estimate of the building downwash.
-
Multiple Tiers (More Realistic)
By creating a building with a series of tiers that decrease in size, you can
approximate a sloped roof. The more tiers you use in this approximation, the
more realistic it will be.
*Building Profile Input Program (BPIP) and Building Profile Input Program for PRIME
(BPIPPRM) are US EPA programs that calculate downwash values for input into the
ISCST3 and AERMOD air dispersion models.

Effects of Climate Change on Arctic Observed
It's becoming harder to find the right snow to build an igloo, and
melting permafrost is turning land into mud. With climate change the
nature of the Arctic is changing, too, in ways that worry the people
who live there.

Fresh Air Problems for Europe’s Cities
Air pollution rose above recommended levels in all 20 European cities sampled
for a European Environment Agency survey in 2000. The survey, published in March,
included Antwerp, Athens, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, and Lisbon. It found that
air-quality limit values were frequently exceeded, especially in streets and other
urban hotspots.
