Global Meteorological Data Available from Lakes Environmental Software |
Lakes Environmental Software is now preparing global
meteorological data for the CALPUFF, AERMOD, and ISCS air
dispersion models. Data is created using
the MM5 model and further processed to be compatible with
the above mentioned models.
The use of gridded meteorological data in the AERMOD model was the topic of much discussion at
the recent A&WMA Specialty Conference in Denver, Colorado. Lakes Environmental is very excited
about this as we have recently entered into a sub-contract with MACTEC to work on gridded met
data in order to fulfill contract needs with the U.S. EPA.

AUSTAL View Workshop in Kassel, May 30-31, 2006 |
ArguSoft conducted a workshop on AUSTAL
View on May
30-31, 2006 in Kassel, Germany for more than 30 customers. It
was the rerun of the successful November 2005 Workshop with
another 40 participants. Some of the themes from this workshop
included: frequent user errors and solutions, project modeling
tips, meteorological and terrain
data products, and building creation from aerial stereo photos. A
guest referee from a State Environmental Agency presented a guideline
on how to consider terrain features
in AUSTAL2000 runs according to the given national guidelines.

AUSTAL View Workshop for Austrian Agencies, Vienna,
June 14, 2006 |
ArguSoft presented AUSTAL View in a one day workshop
for the Austrian Federal State Environmental Agencies. The
Austrian Committee on air quality management and air pollutant
dispersion is considering the selection of AUSTAL2000 as the
reference
model to fulfill the European standard in air dispersion modeling. As
a result, they are looking for a user-friendly interface to manage
the permitting projects. AUSTAL View is
already in use for this purpose at two of the related agencies.
An internationalized version of the numerical core AUSTAL2000
may become more probable under these circumstances. ArguSoft is
supporting this development.

Spectacular Fire at Barcelona Hectic Port
Submitted by Marta Balletbo-Coll, Marketing y Comunicaciones
Manager |
Barcelona’s Port is known for its tremendous and diversified activity: from
American Luxury cruisers to intense commercial traffic with China not to mention
the touristy ships showing an impressive view of the city skyline from the sea.
The spectacle given on May 26th wasn’t on see-sight but on a gigantic plume and
atmospheric contamination covering all city sky when a Port Storehouse building
filled with Potash was set up on fire. The fire was originated when
a rubber conveyor (cinta transportadora) took fire. The Port emergency Plan Level 2 was
enacted - this level doesn’t contemplate communicating the Fire to the citizenship-.
Nevertheless some people felt sourness in the mouth as well as itching in the throat
and eyes irritations.
Only a day before this environmental tragedy, Dr. Jesse L. Thé, from Lakes
Environmental, gave a 4 hour lecture on Air Dispersion Modelling
(ADM) and Environmental Risk Assessment
to a crowded auditorium in Madrid and Barcelona. For most of the seminar
attendees, the spectacular pictures of the Barcelona fire published
by the press were a vivid illustration
of Dr. Thé lectures which were followed with high interest by academia, regulators
and industry members. In fact, the satisfaction among attendants run
so high that talks have already started on setting up new series
of lectures on air dispersion models ISC-AERMOD
and CALPUFF this upcoming fall. Participation to these courses is open
to all interested professionals and scholars in Europe.

EU Emissions Trading Scheme Delivers First Verified Emissions Data for Installations
The European Commission today released the 2005 carbon dioxide
(CO2) emissions data and compliance status of more than 9,400 installations
covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. For four Member States – Cyprus,
Luxembourg, Malta and Poland – no information has been received
as their emission allowance registries are not yet operational.
The Emissions Trading Scheme enables greenhouse gas emissions from
the power sector and energy-intensive industrial plants to be cut
at least cost to the economy.

Capturing “Real World” Aircraft Emissions
The days of watching a black plume of smoke burst out as commercial
aircraft take off are long gone. Still, public fears about toxic air
pollution being sprayed across nearby communities remain. While studies
focusing on NOx have measured and quantified emissions at high altitude,
very few studies have looked at emissions from operating airplanes
on the ground.

Exporting Pollution
In March, Mother Nature offered a surprising twist on spring's colorful
bounty: Yellow snow blanketed the busy streets of Seoul, and creamy
red snowflakes caused panicked residents of eastern Russia to flood
their nearest police stations. The culprit was neither an exploding
factory or an act of sabotage, or anything else in the immediate area.
The strange weather patterns resulted from a mixing of local snowstorms
with dust and sand from China's Gobi Desert, which had been thrust into
the air by cyclones before traveling east.
