Monthly Modeling Tip

Incomplete Contours

When using an air dispersion model, it is quite common to see a situation where there are several incomplete or unclosed contours.

This is an indication that the receptor grid is too small; while it is possible that the maximum concentration has been found, it is also possible that it is outside of the receptor extents.

In this situation, the receptor grid should be extended and the model re-run. Be aware that resizing your receptor grid will change the receptor spacing; you may need to add additional points to the grid.

Once all significant contours are complete/closed the receptor gird should be large enough.

It should be noted that some regulations require a specific receptor grid to be used.

Remember: We are currently accepting submissions for the Monthly Modeling Tip that appears in our newsletters. If you have a modeling tip that may benefit a variety of people, please send it to us at support@weblakes.com. Your name and the name of your organization will appear below the tip providing you with greater exposure.

Ontario Joins Carbon Plan
Jul 18, 2008 - Ontario is joining an initiative which aims to compel companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The province is now part of the Western Climate Initiative (WCI), which includes British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and seven U.S. states.

Natural Disasters Becoming More Frequent
July 14, 2008 - The trend of more frequent global natural disasters continues, due to an onslaught of weather-related crises in the first half of 2008.

The total number of disasters as of June 30, 2008 already exceeds the average number of disasters recorded at mid-year over the past decade. Although 2008 is not on pace to eclipse 2007 as registering the most natural disasters ever, an especially active Atlantic hurricane season is expected.

Bucking Court, EPA Won't Control Climate Gases
July 11, 2008 - WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Friday rejected regulating greenhouse gases blamed for global warming, saying it would cause too many job losses.

In a 588-page federal notice, the Environmental Protection Agency made no finding on whether global warming poses a threat to people's health, reversing an earlier conclusion at the insistence of the White House and officially kicking any decision on a solution to the next president and Congress.

Antarctic Ice Shelf 'Hanging by Thread': European Scientists
July 11, 2008 – PARIS (AFP) — New evidence has emerged that a large plate of floating ice shelf attached to Antarctica is breaking up, in a troubling sign of global warming, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on Thursday.

Images taken by its Envisat remote-sensing satellite show that Wilkins Ice Shelf is "hanging by its last thread" to Charcot Island, one of the plate's key anchors to the Antarctic peninsula, ESA said in a press release.

LCD Chemical Found to Have 17,000 Times the Climate Impact of CO2
July 10, 2008 - Dubbed the "missing greenhouse gas," nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) was found by a recent study to have a global climate impact 17,000 times greater than carbon dioxide. The chemical is found in the LCD panels of cell phones, televisions, and computer monitors, as well as in semiconductors and synthetic diamonds. The chemical is not one of the greenhouse gases monitored by the Kyoto Protocol, due to the fact that LCDs were not produced in significant quantities when it was drafted.

Alberta Launches Climate Change Action Plan
July 8, 2008 - CALGARY, Alberta - The Alberta government is surging ahead on its climate change action plan with two new funds totaling $4 billion to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equal to taking more than a million cars off the road each year. The province will create a $2-billion fund to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects while a second $2-billion fund will propel energy-saving public transit in Alberta.

"We’re tackling both sides of the emissions challenge on behalf of Albertans and all Canadians," said Premier Ed Stelmach. "We’re reducing the impact of industrial emissions with carbon capture and storage and investing in public transit to reduce the impact from our tailpipes."
