Monthly Modeling Tip

Interpreting Contours
Part 1: Significant Contributors

In this series of tips, we will be looking at how modeling results contours can be interpreted, as well as some of the common situations that can arise. In this tip we will look at how sources which are making the most significant contribution to the concentration can affect the appearance of the contours.

In the image below there are two sources: a point source in the center of the domain, and an area source in the North-East.

This image seems to suggest that there are only emissions coming from the area source, but this is not the case. In this situation, the area source is causing much higher concentrations than the point source, which is hiding the contribution of the point source.

By removing the area source it is possible to see the contribution that the point source is making.

In situations where you want to be able to visualize the contributions from each of your sources, it is a good idea to use source groups; this will allow you to easily switch between different sources without re-running the model.

Remember: We are currently accepting submissions for the Monthly Modeling Tip that appears in our newsletters. If you have a modeling tip that may benefit a variety of people, please send it to us at support@weblakes.com. Your name and the name of your organization will appear below the tip providing you with greater exposure.

Global Warming Triggers an International Race for the Arctic
Oct 10, 2008 - A new epoch is beginning at the top of the Earth, where the historic melting of the vast Arctic ice cap is opening a forbidding, beautiful, and neglected swath of the planet. Already, there is talk that potentially huge oil and natural gas deposits lie under the Arctic waters, rendered more accessible by the shrinking of ice cover. Valuable minerals, too. Sea lanes over the top of the world will dramatically cut shipping times and costs. Fisheries and tourism will shift northward. In short, the frozen, fragile north will never be the same.

Global Warming Threatens Tropics
Oct. 10, 2008 - If you can't stand global warming, get out of the tropics. "Many lowland tropical species could be in trouble," a team of researchers said.

While the most significant harm from climate change so far has been in the polar regions, tropical plants and animals may face an even greater threat, say scientists who studied conditions in Costa Rica.

"Many lowland tropical species could be in trouble," the team of researchers, led by Robert K. Colwell of the University of Connecticut, warns in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

Building Better Cities - Is California Showing the Way?
Oct 7, 2008 – California continues to demonstrate its environmental leadership in the fight against global warming with the signing by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of a bill which builds on California’s first-in-the-nation law to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, by adding the nation’s first law to control greenhouse gas emissions by curbing sprawl.

The bill, SB 375 by state Senator Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), includes a series of incentives and penalties aimed at encouraging more environmentally-friendly communities, more sustainable urban development, more alternative transportation options and more pedestrian friendly neighborhoods.

Big Emitters Facing Carbon Limits
Oct 7, 2008 - Sectoral industry agreements have received considerable attention for their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But developing countries remain wary.

As talks between the 160 nations party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change grind towards a finale in Copenhagen in December 2009, many heavy industries are keeping a close watch on what emission reduction schemes will emerge from the discussions.

Arctic Stormier as Earth Warms, Study Finds
Oct 7, 2008 - The Arctic has become more stormy in the past 50 years due to the warming climate, which in turn has quickened the pace of drifting sea ice, a new NASA study finds.

Based on model results, climate scientists had long predicted that a warming climate would increase the frequency and intensity of Arctic storms as ocean waters became progressively warmer.
