How does UAC affect Lakes Environmental software applications?

The User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista and Windows 7 is a security component which is designed to enable users to perform common tasks as non-administrators. It is designed to reduce some of the problems caused by "administrator rights" in past operating systems, as well as prevent such processes as automated installations of third-party software. Unfortunately, the UAC currently has problems interfacing with some software products, including some of the Lakes Environmental software packages.

If you encounter problems running one of the Lakes Environmental programs on your Vista or Windows 7 system, you may want to try disabling the User Account Control on your system.

The UAC can be disabled by following the steps below:

1. Launch the MSCONFIG utility from the Run menu.

System Configuration

2. Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down to the "Change User Account Control settings" option, and click on it.

3. Press the Launch button.

4. Choose the "Never Notify" option and click OK.

UAC

5. Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

Note that you can re-enable the User Account Control through the same process.

CAUTION! Disabling the User Account Control (UAC) effectively removes a level of security from your system. Although this can resolve some problems when running on Vista, you should be aware of the effects on your system before choosing to disable the UAC. We recommend that only experienced users make any of these changes.
