Importing Line Volume and Line Area Sources in AERMOD View
On January 21, 2014, Lakes Environmental released Version 8.5 of the popular AERMOD View software. One of the new features in this release is the ability to import or export Line Volume and Line Area sources.
AERMOD View comes with an easy-to-use spreadsheet template for importing source parameters. The spreadsheet is named Source-Parameters. It comes in both XLS and XLSX formats, and is installed in the C:\Lakes\AERMOD View\Templates\ folder path by default.
Long-time AERMOD View users will be familiar with the Lakes Format Template spreadsheet including its large, descriptive header. This spreadsheet is now capable of handling both Line Volume and Line Area source types.
Line Volume
The below table summarizes the parameters necessary to import Line Volume sources. Each Line Volume source requires 3 rows.
ROW 1 |
|
Type |
Set to LINE_VOLUME |
ID |
The source ID read by AERMOD. Up to 12 alphanumeric characters. |
SourceID_Prefix |
This prefix is added to the generated sources along the line. Up to 4 alphanumeric characters. |
Emission_Rate |
The total emission rate of the line. Units are grams / second |
Configuration |
Choose from Adjacent, Separated, or Separated 2W |
LineVolumeHeight |
Plume height in meters |
PlumeWidth |
Plume width in meters |
LineVolumeType |
Surface-Based or Elevated |
Num_Coords |
The number of node coordinates. At least 2 must be specified |
Xn / Yn |
X and Y coordinate pairs. For example if Num_Coords is set to 3, there will be X1, Y1, X2, Y2, X3, and Y3 columns |
ROW 2 |
|
Rel_Height_m |
Release height in meters for each node coordinate pair |
ROW 3 |
|
Base_Elev_m |
Base elevation in meters for each node coordinate pair |
Line Area
The below table summarizes the parameters necessary to import Line Area sources. Each Line Area sources also require 3 rows.
ROW 1 |
|
Type |
Set to LINE_AREA |
ID |
The source ID read by AERMOD. Up to 12 alphanumeric characters |
SourceID_Prefix |
This prefix is added to the generated sources along the line. Up to 4 alphanumeric characters |
Emission_Rate |
The total emission rate of the line. Units are grams / second / square-meters |
SigmaZ |
Initial vertical dimension (if used) |
Length_X |
Side length in meters |
LineArea_Ratio1 |
Aspect ratio (length / width). A ratio of 1 would create squares (1:1). 10 is commonly used as a default |
|
|
Below is an example of how node coordinates are specified along with their release heights and base elevations. This example is applicable to both Line Volume and Line Area sources.

Europe Strengthens its Carbon Market for a Competitive Low-Carbon Economy
January 8, 2014 - The European Commission welcomes today's vote by EU governments gathered in the Climate Change Committee to postpone the sale of 900 million carbon allowances in the 3rd phase of the EU's Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) which runs up to 2020. This marks a key step in restoring the short term balance in the European carbon market and sets the stage for the proposal of a further structural measure shortly.
Welcoming the vote, Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said: ''Back-loading is now a reality, and the Commission hopes that the first allowances can be back-loaded very soon. But while back-loading will help stabilise the carbon market in the coming years, we must also tackle the more structural challenges. The Commission will address these when it proposes the 2030 climate and energy framework later this month."
BC Government Reaffirms All Five Conditions Must Be Met Before Support for Northern Gateway Pipeline Will Be Considered
Decemober 20, 2013 - VICTORIA - Following the December 19, 2013 Joint Review Panel report release, Environment Minister Mary Polak confirmed the proposed NGP project is part of the way to meeting the first condition (successful completion of the environmental review process), but there are four other conditions that need to be met before British Columbia will consider support for the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, or any heavy oil pipeline.
Australia’s Abatement Task and 2013 Emissions Projections
December 20, 2013 - Recent modelling conducted by the Treasury and the former Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (now the Department of the Environment) indicates the amount of emissions reductions required to achieve Australia’s 2020 target of 5 per cent below 2000 levels is less than previous estimates.
To achieve Australia's unconditional 2020 target of 5 per cent below 2000 levels, Australia must reduce its emissions by 431 Mt CO2-e by 2020.
Shanghai Air Quality Crisis
December 13, 2013 -Shanghai is experiencing unprecedented levels of pollution. Last week fine particulate levels reached almost 20 times WHO guidelines, and they are still at dangerous levels. Matthew Currell reports on China's pollution crisis.
The huge economic and health costs of pollution are estimated to consume approximately 5% of China's gross domestic product. The current "airpocalypse" emergency in Shanghai - which has seen schoolchildren ordered indoors to protect them from the polluted air, flights grounded and companies ordered to cut production - comes at the end of a year in which China's environmental crisis reached a tipping point.
Newly Detected Greenhouse Gas is 7,000 Times More Potent Than CO2
December 13, 2013 – A greenhouse gas that is thought to have a potent impact on global warming was detected in trace amounts in the atmosphere for the first time, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Toronto discovered very small amounts of an industrial chemical, known as perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA), in the atmosphere. While only traces of PFTBA were measured, the chemical has a much higher potential to affect climate change on a molecule-by-molecule basis than carbon dioxide (CO2), the most significant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, and a major contributor to global warming, said study co-author Angela Hong, of the University of Toronto's department of chemistry.
EPA Program Seeks to Improve Air Quality in Port Communities
December 11, 2013 - WASHINGTON - EPA is announcing the availability of $4 million in grant funding to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing emissions from marine and inland water ports, many of which are in areas that face environmental justice challenges.
“Ports are essential to the nation’s economy and transportation infrastructure, but they also are home to some of the nation’s toughest environmental challenges,” said Janet McCabe, acting assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. “These grants will help port authorities to provide immediate emissions reductions that will benefit those who work and live in port-side communities.”
