Modeling Tip

AERMET View™ Land Use Creator for AERSURFACE

AERMET View is the interface developed by Lakes Environmental for using the U.S. EPA meteorological pre-processor AERMET. Part of AERMET’s input requirements are three surface characteristics: albedo, Bowen ratio, and surface roughness.

Back in 2008, the U.S. EPA released the AERSURFACE program which automatically calculates these parameters using digital land cover data files in NLCD92 format (USGS National Land Cover Database 1992 edition). While AERSURFACE makes the surface characteristic calculation process much easier, it only works for locations in the lower 48 United States.

Lakes Environmental developed the Land Use Creator which allows modelers to create custom digital land use data files in NLCD92 formal for any location worldwide which can subsequently be passed through to AERSURFACE program.

The video below demonstrates how to use AERMET View's Land Use Creator.

Study Finds Air Quality in Northern Alberta Better than in Province’s Big Cities

June 3, 2015- Levels of three major pollutants in the oilsands region did not increase much in the past 15 years as open pit mining expanded, says a professor in the University of Alberta’s school of public health.

A study of 15 years of data beginning in 1998 shows only a “small” change in air quality in Fort McMurray and further north in the First Nations community of Fort McKay, Warren Kindzierski says.

The air quality in the northern communities compares favourably to the quality of air in big cities such Edmonton and Calgary, he said.

But Fort McKay First Nation said the study gives an incomplete picture of air quality problems because it only looks at only three pollutants — nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Appeals Court Rejects Challenge to EPA Air Pollution Limits

June 2, 2015 - TA federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld the Environmental Protection Agency’s process for determining whether states are complying with air-quality ozone limits, ruling against states, industry groups and environmental organizations that challenged the rules.

EPA to Set New Limits on Airplane Emissions

June 2, 2015 - WASHINGTON - The Obama administration is set to announce that it will require new rules to cut emissions from airplanes, expanding a quest to tackle climate change that has included a string of significant regulations on cars, trucks and power plants.

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to report as early as Friday its conclusion that greenhouse gas emissions from airplanes endanger human health because they significantly contribute to global warming, although people familiar with the agency’s plans said the announcement could slip into next week.

EPA Proposes Increases in Renewable Fuel Levels

May 29, 2015 - ALANTA - Today the EPA announced proposed volume requirements under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, and also proposed volume requirements for biomass-based diesel for 2017. The proposal would boost renewable fuel production and provide for ambitious yet responsible growth over multiple years, supporting future expansion of the biofuels industry.

“This proposal marks an important step forward in making sure the Renewable Fuel Standard program delivers on the Congressional intent to increase biofuel use, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy security,” said Janet McCabe, the acting assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air. “We believe these proposed volume requirements will provide a strong incentive for continued investment and growth in biofuels.”
