EU Action to Curb Air Pollution by Cars: Questions and Answers

August 31, 2017 - Emissions of air pollutants are the most significant environmental cause of premature death in the EU, and lead to respiratory diseases, major healthcare costs and lost working days. The most recent data indicate that three air pollutants alone (PM 2.5, NO2 and O3) are responsible for 400 000 premature deaths per year in the EU including some 70.000 directly linked to nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Urban transport is also one of the reasons why many urban areas are in breach of air pollution limits.

August 28, 2017 - Ottawa’s push to beef up and centralize regulatory reviews of major energy projects is running into a big and unpredictable hurdle: Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil industry.

“Newfoundland has always been a fighting province,” said one observer who follows the sector in Atlantic Canada. “Anything that goes against perceived ownership of resources, whether it’s fisheries or oil and gas, they will fight the federal government on it.”

Trump Infrastructure Push Rolls Back Environmental Rules

August 15, 2017 - WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday rolled back rules regarding environmental reviews and restrictions on government-funded building projects in flood-prone areas as part of his proposal to spend $1 trillion to fix aging U.S. infrastructure.

Trump’s latest executive order would speed approvals of permits for highways, bridges, pipelines and other major building efforts. It revokes an Obama-era executive order aimed at reducing exposure to flooding, sea level rise and other consequences of climate change.

“It’s going to be quick. It’s going to be a very streamlined process. And by the way, if it doesn’t meet environmental safeguards, we’re not going to approve it - very simple,” Trump said at a press conference at Trump Tower in New York.
