Modeling Tip
Importing & Exporting Traffic Data in CALRoads View
The CALINE series of models was developed to estimate pollutant concentrations from motor vehicles at roadway intersections. It includes three primary models: CALINE, CAL3QHC, and CAL3QHCR. The latter allows processing of real meteorological data (up to one year) and input of vehicular emissions, traffic volume, and signalization (ETS) data. Data reflecting traffic conditions for individual hours of a week can be input into CAL3QHCR.
Lakes Environmental recently released CALRoads View Version 6.5 which includes the ability to import from or export to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, the ETS data. A template spreadsheet is available in the C:\Lakes\CALRoads View\Templates folder, and it supports both Free Flow and Queue links.
Open the spreadsheet to begin entering data of interest. Blue columns are required for all links – Link ID, Type (Free Flow or Queue), Description, Hour (1-24), and Traffic Volume (vehicles per hour). Additional data is filled in based on Link Type.
To export existing ETS data, open the Patterns for ETS Data dialog and select the button. Each individual pattern should be exported separately.

Meet America's Super Polluters
September 29, 2016 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. - To see one of the country’s largest coal-fired power plants, head northwest from this Ohio River city. Or east, because there’s another in the region. In fact, nearly every direction you go will take you to a coal plant — seven within 30 miles.
Collectively they pump out millions of pounds of toxic air pollution. They throw off greenhouse gases on par with Hong Kong or Sweden.
EPA Finalizes Two Rules to Reduce Use and Emissions of Potent Greenhouse Gases
September 26, 2016 - WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized two rules that will reduce the projected growth and emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a class of chemicals commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning that are potent greenhouse gases and can be hundreds to thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. These rules are the latest in a series of actions demonstrating continued commitment by the United States to reduce emissions of climate-damaging HFCs at home, while working with other countries to amend the Montreal Protocol to address HFCs globally.
EPA Releases National Assessment of Strategies to Reduce Air Pollution at Ports
September 22, 2016 - WASHINGTON - An EPA report finds that air pollution at the nation’s ports can be reduced significantly at all port types and sizes through a variety of strategies and cleaner technologies. Implementing these approaches, the report finds, would reduce greenhouse gas and other harmful emissions from diesel-powered ships, trucks and other port equipment.
“The National Port Strategy Assessment: Reducing Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases at U.S. Ports” examines current and future emission trends from diesel engines in port areas, and explores the emissions reduction potential of strategies like replacing and repowering older, dirtier vehicles and engines and deploying zero emissions technologies.
