Worldwide Meteorological Data

The following meteorological data formats are available for purchase:

  • CALMET-Ready Data: MM5 and WRF format

  • AERMET-Ready Data: Surface data in SAMSON format and Upper Air data in TD-6201 format

Lakes Environmental offers a service providing modeled meteorological data for any location in the world.  We obtain this data by running the MM5 (5th-generation Mesoscale Model) model for a specified location and site domain.

MM5 is a prognostic meteorology model developed by Pennsylvania State University and the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

Once the MM5 processing has been completed using input information supplied by the client (such as the location of the site, the years to be processed, etc.), we convert the raw MM5 output into a format recognized by air dispersion models such as AERMOD and CALPUFF.

CALMET-Ready MM5 Data

CALMET-ready MM5 data is produced in a format automatically recognized by the CALMET meteorological processor used to prepare met data for CALPUFF modeling.  The file consists of three-dimensional data spanning many vertical layers and covering a horizontal grid and domain specified by the client.

The following are the typical data parameters available:

Parameter

Description

Grid Resolution

  • 4 km: usually recommended if site is located on complex terrain
  • 12 km: usually recommended if site is relatively flat

Domain Sizes

  • 50 x 50 km
  • 100 x 100 km

Years

  • 2001 to 2009

Note: Parameters outside those provided in the table above can be requested by special order.

AERMET-Ready MM5 Data

Our AERMET-ready MM5 processing produces data files which are directly recognized by the AERMET meteorological preprocessor used to prepare met data for AERMOD modeling.  There are two types of output: an hourly surface met data file (in SAMSON format) and an upper air met data file (in TD-6201 format). The final output is generated by creating a pseudo met-station at the site location provided by the client.

Note: Our AERMET-ready MM5 data is also suitable for use in the PCRAMMET meteorological preprocessor used to prepare met data for ISCST3 modeling.
